Our Name
Our name was formed out of a vision to connect communities - a vision we continue to share today.
In the year 2000, the web, and all that it represented, sparked a great number of many great online start-up ideas. One industry set to undergo considerably large change was the music industry. Brad, a Fatpublisher founder and big music lover, realised the potential that the web offered to emerging musicians. Traditionally, emerging musicians were considerably beholden to the whims of record companies. With more and more of the population connecting and clicking around the web for information and entertainment, an opportunity arose - amateur musicians could build and promote their music to an audience they would otherwise not have access to.
'FAT' then stood for 'Free Amateur Tunes (FAT), and Fatpublisher would publish music by emerging musicians to a wider public audience. In doing so, emerging musicians would be exposed early and the public would benefit from a wider selection of great quality music. The business name was registered and business planning began.
At the centre of every good business plan is a solid revenue model. Unfortunately, the early Fatpublisher business model was too early for it's time and plans for an online community of emerging musicians and a spirited public audience were shelved. In hindsight, the decision was a good one. Many early online music startups failed at the hands of cashed up record companies with a long line up of lawyers willing to take up the challenge of maintaining the status-quo.
Brad Pollard (B. Eng. Aero) and fellow founder Felisimina Jom (B. Bus) decided to apply the knowledge they gained in their earlier business consulting roles and launch Fatpublisher as a web design and web development company - a company that would offer online strategy and technical solutions to traditional offline businesses responding to a changing consumer landscape. Fatpublisher Pty Ltd was formed in Sydney in March 2000.
